# ETH Unlocks

The Ethereum Shanghai Upgrade is a hard fork and the protocol’s first major upgrade since ‘The Merge’ in 2022. This network upgrade is scheduled for April 2023, and its main purpose is to allow stakers and validators to withdraw staked ETH from the Beacon Chain.
